The founder and leader of the All People’s Congress (APC) Hassan Ayariga, is on the view that, Nana Addo may not be the President of this country if the Electoral Commission doubts the credibility of the current voter register.
“If they say the voter register is not credible then Nana Addo is not president of the republic of Ghana, if they agreed the voter register is not credible. Why did they use it for the last Assembly elections? They should stop their hypocrisy”, he stated.
He said the persistence by the EC to go ahead to compile a new voter register is trying to create confusion in the country.
The leader of APC, addressing TI KU SAGI demonstrators at the Tamale Jubilee Park over the weekend, indicated that, the Inter-Party Resistance against New Voters’ Register, has tabled series of activities to put more pressure on electoral commission to stop compiling new voter register.
According to him, the reason by the EC to compile a new voters register is unreasonable, and unacceptable, and thus, the inter party resistance will not accept any ‘by force register’ imposed on them.
“We have tabled a lot of activities against the registration of the new voter register. This is one of such activities. We have more to come. They should expect a huge resistance from the Inter-Party Resistance committee”, he assured.
The electoral commission of Ghana after 2019 Assembly elections announces its decision to compile a new voter register for 2020 general elections.
However About eight political parties forming the Inter-Party Resistance Against a New Voters’ Register (IPRNA) and other Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) have called on the EC to drop the plans.
The anti-new-register group held a protest in Tamale on Saturday with similar demonstrations scheduled for Kumasi and Accra.
Reacting to the protests, the Deputy Commissioner of the EC, Dr Eric Asare Bossman, said the election management body will go ahead with its plans since it is in the best interest of the country.
“The Commission has made it very clear that looking at where we find ourselves now, it will be more appropriate and better for us to be able to compile a new register to guarantee and ensure that we have a credible, free and fair election,” he stated.
