N/R: Stop holding yourself as Chief of Tamale

The traditional rulers of Gulkpegu, Sagnarigu, Banvum, Lamashegu, have warned Tamale Dakpema, Naa Bawa Fuseini, to desist from holding and proclaiming himself as a Paramount Chief of the Tamale traditional area.

According to the chiefs, the Tamale Dakpema Naa Bawa Fuseini, is not a member of both the Dagbon Traditional Council and the Northern Regional House of Chiefs hence, he cannot hold himself as Paramount Chief of Tamale.

“One cannot be a Paramount Chief if you are not a member of the Dagbon Tradional Council, and that of the Northern Regional House of Chiefs, and Dakpema is not a member of both institutions and therefore cannot hold himself as such”, they said.

The actions by the chiefs followed after some giant billboard with the inscription “The Paramount Chief of Tamale Traditional Area (Naa-Yab Dakpema)”, erected at some vantage points within the Tamale Metropolis towards the COVID-19 and conflict mitigation sensitization durbar on Saturday 29th January, 2022 at Dakpema palace.

The Covid-19 and conflict mitigation sensitization durbar organized by the Dakpema Palace in collaboration with Care International, was scheduled for Saturday January 29, with all prominent chiefs within the Tamale Metropolis and Sagnarigu Municipality expected to grace the occasion.

Speaking at a press conference at the Gulkpegu Chief Palace on Friday 28 January 2022, Secretary to the Paramount Chief of the Gulkpegu Traditional Area, Mohammed Rashad who addressed the media on behalf of the chief, indicated that, the Dagbon customs and constitution recognizes Gulkpe Naa as the paramount chief of Tamale.

He added that, the Gulkpe Naa was gazetted as the Paramount Chief of Gulkpegu traditional area by the National House of Chiefs on November 14, 2012, after his enskinment in that same year.

Mohammed Rashad on behalf of the chief however, described the action by the Dakpema “mischief” and must be checked.

“The mischief of the Dakpema must be checked. “Dakpema started this mischief with his superior (Buglana). Now that he is extending it to the Gulkpegu skin, Yendi might be next, who knows”, he said.

The two palaces within the Tamale Metropolis have been on each others throat over a decade now as to who has the authority over the Tamale Traditional Area.
