N/R: Savelugu Municipal Assembly stop Taxi Drivers from Operating… Reasons will shock you

The management of the Savulegu Municipal Assembly (SMA), led by Madam Ayishatu Seidu, has on Thursday 3rd March, 2022 prevented commercial taxi drivers from operating in the area, over their failure to reduce their fare for passengers.

The assembly after preventing the commercial drivers from operating also provided a bus to convey passengers to and fro from Savulegu to Tamale.

According to the assembly, that the commercial taxi drivers had implemented about 43% on their fares instead the agreed 15% increment across the country hence, the decision to stop them from operating.

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Savelugu Madam Ayishatu Seidu in an interview with Diamond FM’s Mohammed Ibn Abdallah, indicated that, her outfit over the last few days had engage the leadership of the taxi drivers and the leadership of Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) over the issue, and asked them to review their fares by charging Gh¢8 instead of Gh¢10.

However, the commercial drivers are unwilling to comply.

“Actually, with the increase of fuel prices, initially, they were charging Gh¢7 from Tamale to Savulegu, before the increment of fuel price. We were expecting that, after the increment, they would have been charging Gh¢ 8. As we speak with you, since 26th February, they have been charging Gh¢10. We engaged the leadership of GPRTU, and some of the taxi drivers and talk to them to reduce the fares. They left, and later said they are not ready to reduce the fare”, she narrates.

Madam Ayishatu further explained that, “this is too much for our people to bear, and so we told them we will find alternatives to cushion our people. So, this morning we brought in a joint security to see to it that no taxi is operating”.

She mentioned that, the assembly will only allow the commercial taxi drivers to operate within Saveligu if only they are ready to reduce their fare.

“If they are out of the scene we will find other alternatives, because the tro tro will be working”, she said.
