N/R: Fire destroys shops at Aboabo Market as Fire officers battle to douse it

A blazing fire swept through a portion of the Tamale Aboabo Market and razed down several shops including Ganorma Agro Chemical Store, destroying products worth millions of Ghana Cedis.

According to some eye witness, the fire started at about 5am on Saturday 29th January, 2022 from one of the wooding shops and spread out to the other structures containing chemicals Ganorma Agro store.

The items destroyed include knapsack machines, several farm inputs as well as food stuff, bags of maize, millet, soya beans, rice, among others were burnt in the fire.

Although the official cause of the fire is not yet known, affected shop owners were seen arranging and clearing the destroyed items when diamondfmonline.com visit the scene.

Firefighters were said to have had a hard time dousing the fire.

The acting Public Relations Officer (PRO) for the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) in the Northern Region, Assistant Divisional Officer Grade 2, Baba Hudu, said the timely intervention by the Ghana National Fire Service save Tamale Aboabo market from razing down by the fire.

“We had a distressed call at about 5:15am on Saturday reporting a fire outbreak at Tamale Aboabo market. So, we quickly dispatch our men into the scene. But upon observation of the fire, we had to call for three more fire tenders making it four tenders plus a private water tank to be able to fight the fire. Thankfully, we were able to bring the fire under control, and we had succeeded in extinguishing the fire completely”, he said.

“What this means is that, if Fire Service hadn’t attended to this fire, by now the whole of the Tamale Aboabo market would have been razed down by the fire”, he stressed.

The acting PRO for the GNFS, speaking exclusively to diamondfmonline.com however, called people within the Northern Region to abreast themselves with basic fire safety precautions to prevent them from undesired fires.

“We experience this type of fire today because people failed to adhere to our advice”, he said.

Meanwhile, some of the affected shop owners who share their frustration with diamondfmonline.com, said, they were called in the early hours of Saturday that there was a fire outbreak in the area. And so, they rushed to the place to salvage some of their items. But upon reaching there, all their items and properties were completely burnt into ashes.
