MTN Ghana to deploy 80 sites in Northern Ghana as part of $1.1 Billion Investment
MTN-Ghana is set to build 80 new sites across the Northern, savannah, Upper East and North East Region. Of the 80 sites, 38 will be in the Northern Region, 17 in Savannah, 14 in Upper East and 11 in Northeast.
Senior Manager for Network Implementation at MTN Ghana, Emmanuel Afutu announced this at a Media and Stakeholders engagement forum in Tamale.
This year’s forum which also marks MTN’s 30 years in Ghana, drew editors from the Northern, Savanna, Upper East and the North East region, as well as representatives from the Regulatory institutions like the National Communication Authority, the Environmental Protection Agency and representative from the Metro Assembly and the Police service.
Mr Afutu said 30 years of connecting the Ghanaian people and businesses, could not have been possible without the commitment to building a stronger network backed by real investment.
“Today MTN connects more than 32 million subscribers across the country and continues to play a significant role in Ghana’s digital transformation. We remained committed to building a stronger network, back by real investment,” he remarked.
He said MTN’s plans an additional 500 of building sites to boost capacity and service quality is backed by a 1.1 billion USD investment over the next three years. About USD 380 million of the investment will be spent in 2026 alone.
“We believe that the true value of connectivity is measured not only by the sites we build or the technology we deploy, but by the opportunities it creates and the lives it touches,” he opined.
According to Mr. Afutu, in the first half of 2026, service revenue grew by 32.3 percent to 5.0 billion Ghana cedi, EBITDA rose 47.1 percent to 9.3 billion cedis and profit after tax increased 46,8 percent to 5.1 billion cedis. It also contributed 5.8 billion cedis to taxes and 384.7 million cedis fees and levies in the same period.
The Senior Manager also stated that Mobile Money transaction value grew from 44.4 percent year-on-year in first half of 2026, with active users up by 3.1 percent and revenue up by 23.3 percent, saying “for many MoMo has become than a payment platform, it is a gateway to economic participation”
He mentioned to the media and other stakeholders that apart from investing in the network’s quality, they are investing in people through the MTN Ghana’s foundation, in critical sectors like Education, health and Economic Empowerment, alongside the MTN skills academy which targets 100,000 youth with digital and career skills, the Bright Scholarships Scheme which has benefited 1200 students by supporting them with fees and laptops and the MTN Heroes of Change initiative which will award the top prize winner with 400,000 cedis and category winner- 200,000 cedis and 100,000 cedis for the finalists.
Being about people, he said MTN volunteers worked in Zogbeli cluster Block A JHS and Damongo Gorls Model School, among others in all 16 regions of Ghana where Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) activities were undertaken to create healthier learning environment for school children.
He said MTN remains committed to ensuring no one is left behind in Ghana’s digital journey;
“We are mindful of challenges around access, affordability and digital technology, adding that technology should be equalizer, it should ensure that no one is left behind.”
The Acting Manager for Corporate Communications at MTN-Ghana, Madam Afua Falconer, for her part commended the media for its continuous support to the company.
She also highlighted MTN’s sustainability Agenda including earmarking August as sustainability month where through its ESG pillars: doing for people, doing it right, doing for growth and doing for planet is vigorously being pursued.
