MTN donates Ghc15K, airtime to support Damba festival
MTN Ghana has supported the celebration of the Damba Festival in the Dagbon Kingdom of the Northern Region with a cheque for GHS 15,000.
Additionally, the telecommunication company presented airtime worth GHC 2,000, assorted drinks, and water to the Gbewaa palace.
The Damba Festival is an ancient celebration observed by the people of Dagbon and other ethnic groups in northern Ghana. It is typically celebrated in the Dagomba lunar month of Damba.
The festival commemorates the birth and naming ceremony of Prophet Muhammad, but it has also become an occasion to celebrate chieftaincy, reunite families, and showcase the rich culture of the Dagbon people.
Presenting the cheques and items, Kwami Aseye Akude, Regional Branches Manager for the Northern Regions, said the company will support various activities during the festival.
These include the community gala events and the Grand Durbar to climax the festival.
Mr Akude emphasized the importance MTN places on cultural celebrations, stating, “We believe that festival celebrations actually reveal a lot about our society and bring out the best in us as African people.”
He explained that as an African company, MTN values the heritage and traditions of the continent, including Ghana.
He mentioned that MTN has a history of supporting traditional authorities in their festival celebrations, and this donation is a continuation of that commitment.
In addition to the monetary and in-kind donations, MTN has set up experiential centers in town to showcase their products and services.
These centres, he said, would also be used to educate customers about mobile money fraud prevention, addressing a growing concern among their clientele.
Mr Akude conveyed the company wishes for the long life of the King, as well as peace, prosperity, and progress for the Dagbon Kingdom.
“We believe that we will continue to enjoy this partnership and this relationship with him. God bless him and God bless the Kingdom”, he said.
The Spokesperson for the Yaa-Naa , Musah Yakubu thanked MTN Ghana and prayed for their growth in Ghana and beyond.
