MMT drivers and other staff in Tamale lay down their tools over what they terms as disrespect from management at the national level

Workers of the Metro Mass Transit Company in Tamale are on sit down strike in protest over poor conditions of services. The protests have brought all other activities at the company to a halt.

The drivers and other staff initiated the protest on Thursday after one Agyekum, an internal auditor from the head office of metro mass stormed the northern regional depot in the early hours of June 13 taking along with him, the staffs log book.

Some of the staffs claimed that said internal auditor visited the premises of metro mass depot without informing the northern regional manager and other senior staffs of the depot, hence their action.

Speaking to Diamond news team, some of the drivers and other staffs accused the managing director of metro mass transit, Albert Adu Boahen of disrespecting the northern regional manager, Mohammed Ibrahim Abubakari.

They also lamented that their sit down strike action was to demand better salaries, conditions of services and respect from their MD. They indicated that the strike will continue if the managements fails to address their concerns.

“We haven’t received our salary and allowance is Ten percent a trip for almost a month now, and if you complained they will sack you, “one driver lamented

The drivers who burnt automobile tyres at the MMT depot also threatened a demonstration against the Managements over lack of maintenance of the buses which was causing the many accidents on the roads.

However the junior workers union secretary of MMT, Abdul kareem Tijani said MMT management at the national level had not shown much concern about the company’s development. He also raised the issues with the working condition of his members, which he said had reduced the quality of employees’ lives.

The strike action left Metro Mass passengers frustrated as there were no buses to convey them to their destinations.
