Kennedy Agyapong goes to the aid of the people of Bawku

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin Central Constituency, Hon. Kennedy Ohene Agyapong has presented a quantity of food items to the people of Bawku in the Upper East Region to lessen the effects of the seeming food shortage within the Bawku Municipality.

The items include five hundred (500) bags of 50kg rice and fifty (50) boxes of cooking oil.

The donation is in fulfillment of a pledge he made to the Bawku NPP chairman, who personally informed the MP about the current happenings in the area.

The lawmaker presented the items to the Bawku Municipal Chief Executive Hon. Hamza Amadu at the forecourt of the Bawku Municipal Assembly on Thursday Sept 29, 2022 for onward distribution to all residents within the Bawku Township.

“I had a call from the chairman barely two weeks ago, and he requested a favor, that they in Bawku are stranded and they cannot go out there for food and other things, so if I will be of help, and I gladly accepted. So I organized five hundred bags of 50kg rice and 50 boxes of cooking oil just to assist the with the problem that they are going through because of the crises in Bawku.”

“And honestly, I don’t want to be caught in the middle, that I am supporting one side, I want the items to be shared equally among all the tribes. This should be a sign for all of us to smoke the peace pipe,” he said.

Assin North MP Kennedy Ohene Agyapong

The Assin Central MP, who is vying to lead the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) come 2024, thus urged the people of Bawku and its surrounding communities to embrace peace to accelerate socio-economic development and transformation in the area.

“I was observing from Tamale to Bolga, the flat land and I have seen rice but we need a mechanized rice farming system. These things are coming from India, if we have peace, we can also do it here for ourselves without importing this rice. But without peace, we cannot do anything, and so I am taking this opportunity to appeal to both sides most especially the youth to use non-violent means to channel their energies into ensuring peace in the area,” he stated.

The Bawku Municipal Chief, Hamza Amadu, who received the items on behalf of the people of Bawku, thanked the MP for the gesture and indicated that his outfit is working hard to ensure a total peace within the Municipality.

On his part, Alhaji Abdullai Issaka, who made the appeal on behalf of the people of Bawku, commended the MP for responding quickly to his plea.

“We will do our best to ensure all the tribes have their share. People are suffering a lot, but with this donation he has made I think it will go a long way to help some of them, if not all, because per the situation we are currently facing here in Bawku, people cannot go to market. Others cannot go to their farms so where will they get food to eat? And I have been receiving calls from people asking me to support, therefore the decision to inform the MP,” he narrated.

Bawku has been a hotspot for clashes between residents of various ethnic groups. The government has on several occasions imposed a curfew on the town to calm tensions and maintain law and order.
