Handball Referees and Match Delegates Course Underway in Tamale

A three day Handball referees and match delegates course has commenced in Tamale. The course which is being put together by the Handball Association of Ghana (HAG), the Confederation of African Handball (CAHB) and the Ghana Handball Referees Association is taking place at the coverage room of the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium in Tamale.

The Tamale course is targeting participants from the Northern sector and follows a similar one that was organized in Cape Coast for the southern sector.

About twenty-five (25) participants took part in the opening session on Wednesday 11th November, 2020 in the morning when Diamond FM sports team visited the venue.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Diamond FM sports, Technical Director of the Handball Association of Ghana (HAG), George Bankole said they were expecting at least fifty (50) participants by the close of the course on Friday 13th November, 2020 since they have had calls from other participants who are still travelling from other regions in the north to join.

He said the ultimate aim of the course was to get more Ghanaians to officiate the handball discipline when Ghana hosts the African Games in 2023. Hence the course is equipping the already existing referees as well as table officials of handball and other potential people willing to take up the sport.

He said, “Our main purpose for organizing this course is because Ghana has been given the mandate to host the 2023 African Games and as an association, HAG, we are expecting that majority of the officials will come from the country and that has been the practice. So we have taken it upon ourselves in consultation with CAHB to train these people.”

George Bankole further said the main international facilitators from CAHB will join the training via zoom on day two to take the participants through various sessions. He added that, “We are going to take them through how they will be able to officiate efficiently. And it is not referees alone, we have and we are also training match delegates and table officials to help in the development of the game of handball.”

At the time of Diamond FM Sports team’s visit, participants were seen busily going through formalities for the three day course.
