The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), have call on the government to initiate measures to implement the twenty percent (20%) Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) which the GRNMA and other Organised Labour groups have called for within the past few months.

The group made the call in a communique after the second quarter National Council meetings on 27th June to 1st July 2022 in Accra, to deliberated on issues affecting nurses and midwives in Ghana.

“It is worth noting that, the Base Pay negotiations for 2023 which should have been completed as at April 2022, are still pending. In view of the afore mentioned issues, it will be imperative for a Public Sector Joint Standing Negotiating Committee meeting to be called as soon as possible to discuss these pertinent matters”, the statement added.

The Ghana Nurses and Midwives Association in a statement signed by President of the Association Perpetual Ofori Ampofo also urge government to invest more in nurses and midwives and prioritize the improvement of their working conditions as they continue to battle the covid-19 pandemic.

Press Release
The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), the single largest health sector Union in Ghana and the holder of the Collective Bargaining Certificate for all nurses and midwives in the country, held its second quarter National Council meetings from 27th June to 1st July 2022 at its

Headquarters at Shiashie in Accra, and having deliberated on the myriad of challenges affecting nurses and midwives in Ghana, wish to state the following:

1.The plight of the Ghanaian nurse and midwife is worsening by the day in the face of increasing prices of goods and services, with our meager salaries not affording us the opportunity to have any decent living. Government must therefore as a matter of urgency initiate measures to implement the twenty percent (20%) Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) which the GRNMA and other Organised Labour groups have called for within the past few months. It is worth noting that, the Base Pay negotiations for 2023 which should have been completed as at April 2022, are still pending. In view of the afore mentioned issues, it will be imperative for a Public Sector Joint Standing Negotiating Committee meeting to be called as soon as possible to discuss these pertinent matters.

We wish to reiterate the need for the government as the largest employer to invest in nurses and midwives and prioritize the improvement of our working conditions as we continue to battle the Covid19 pandemic.

Pension contributions and Association dues contribution payments are all in arrears with our Rotation nurses and midwives having up to nine months’ arrears of their allowances not paid. We therefore call on the government to expedite action on the payment of these statutory payments.

We appeal to all nurses and midwives in Ghana to remain calm and continue to have trust in leadership to always have their best interest at heart even as we engage our stakeholders to address the issues stated above.

We urge all Ghanaians who have not been vaccinated against Covid-19 to go for their jabs at the nearest health facility and continue to adhere to the Covid-19 protocols as cases steadily rise. We encourage all nurses and midwives who have not taken their second doses of their Covid-19 vaccines and their booster doses to do so as soon as possible.
