Gov’t setting bad precedent with ‘useless’ allegations against Ofosu Ampofo – Mahama

Former President John Mahama has lashed out at the governing New Patriotic Party over its prosecution of National Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo.

He described as useless allegations levelled against Mr. Ampofo.

According to him, the recent invitations extended to the NDC Chairman by the Police CID smack of desperation from the governing party.

“Let them remember that in whatever they do, they are setting precedent. You cannot take any frivolous and vexatious investigation and be inviting the Chairman of the biggest opposition party every day to the CID headquarters on very useless allegations,” he said on Wednesday.

Mr. Ofosu Ampofo has been summoned by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to assist with investigations in the wake of the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election violence.

He was heard on tape allegedly suggesting that plans were in place for acts that would cause fear and panic in society.

He also endorsed verbal assaults on the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, among others.

The latest invitation to the CID has to do with the recent kidnappings and fire incidents in the country.

With an eye on the 2020 elections. Mr. Mahama stressed that “no amount of harassment of our National Chairman will save the NPP from defeat.

“Indeed it is a sign of desperation that the Chairman of our party is constantly being harassed by the police authorities,” he added.

“We are advising the NPP – if you deliver on your promises, the people of Ghana will look favourably at you but if you have failed don’t out of your desperation decide to harass our party officials. Whatever you do, you cannot escape the judgment of the people.”

Following the latest invitation, a Deputy General Secretary of the NDC, Peter Boamah Otokunor has said the party will not honour the invitation the Criminal Investigative Department (CID) extended to its National Chairman, Mr. Samuel  Ofosu Ampofo.

Speaking on Eyewitness News on Wednesday, Mr. Otokunor said the invitation is a complete encroachment on the rights of their National Chairman.

“We have seen the letter and I can assure you that our National Chairman will not be responding to this invitation. We are not going to honour this kind of invitation, because it is an assault on the fundamental human rights of our national chairman.”

Mr. Ampofo was recently charged with conspiracy to cause harm and assault against a public officer alongside a deputy National Communication Director of NDC Kweku Boahen.

The two national officers of the NDC pleaded not guilty to the charges and are currently on bail in the sum of GHc 100,000 each.

Their case has been adjourned the case to May 27, 2019.
