“Ghana is a peaceful country because of our religious tolerance”- Dr Mahamudu Bawumia
Vice President, and flagbearer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has stated that Ghana’s long-lasting peace has been consolidated by the religious tolerance existing amongst the people in the country.
According to him, the acceptance of each other’s faith without discrimination, is what has accorded the nation the feat as one of the most peaceful countries on the continent and the most peaceful in West Africa.
The ruling NPP presidential candidate for this year’s election, made these remarks at a meeting with the clergy in Tamale in the Northern Region on Thursday May 16, 2024 as part of his nationwide campaign tour in the region.
He recounted his days as a Member of the Methodist Boys’ Brigade and now serving as a national patron to the group despite being a Muslim.
“I was a strong member of the Methodist Boys’ Brigade in Sakasaka. And then today, I am Vice President and I’m also a patron of the Methodist Boys Brigade in Ghana. So we are a very blessed country”, he said.
He noted that Ghana is blessed, for people of diverse religions to have coexisted peacefully amongst themselves over the years.
The flagbearer of the NPP while commending Ghanaians for this tolerance, thus admonished them not to take the atmosphere for granted.
“Our country Ghana, I believe, is very blessed and we are blessed likely because of the religious tolerance that we have amongst the religions in Ghana. It’s very special. Most of the time, we take it for granted but in fact, that type of tolerance and acceptance of each other is unique to us. It is for me, the heart of the peace that we enjoy in Ghana. Ghana is the most peaceful country in West Africa and one of the most peaceful countries in Africa,” he indicated.
Vice President in his remarks promised to continue his engagement with the clergy in other regions to establish a stronger bond between the church and the state to enhance development.
