Four persons qualify to represent Northern Region in the upcoming National Arm-wrestling Championships

Four strong persons have qualified to represent the Northern Region in the National Arm-wrestling Championships on June 17 in Accra. The event under the auspices of the Ghana Arm-wrestling Federation is aimed at selecting Ghana’s representatives for the African Arm-wrestling Championships.

The four persons distinguished themselves ahead of their colleagues when the qualification event took place at the Kaladan Park in Tamale last Saturday. The four qualified in both the 60kg and 70kg categories.

In the 60kg category Osman Saeed and Robert Armstrong emerged winners.

Abubakari Nuhu and Abdul Rahman Issah took the qualifying slots for the 70kg category.

The qualifying event which was the first of its kind in Tamale drew people from all walks of life to witness the tenacity of the participants.

The Northern Regional representative of the Ghana Arm-wrestling Federation, Mr. Wisdon Abomega and his team co-ordinated the event to a successful conclusion.

In an interview with Diamond FM Sports after the event, Mr. Wisdom called for support for the seeming least financed sports such as Arm-wrestling which he said will go a long way to market the country.

Mr. Wisdom described the event as fairly successful since it was the first time it was taking place in Tamale.

“In fact this first ever competition, I can say it is a success though I can say the turn-out has not been very encouraging but because I think this is our maiden competition I think that is why? Though there has been so many challenges, I think those who came forward to take part in the competition I can tell from today that we have a very bright future in Ghana Arm-wrestling from the north here.”

He observed that a lot of people are afraid of how the competition might go should they take part in it. He therefore used the opportunity to allay their fears and called on females especially to come out in their numbers the next time.

“When we started the competition and those who were there I realized that most of them, they have started developing interest in it. I have not seen any of the ladies contesting in this challenge for now but I realized that after the competition some people are now calling in to get the opportunity to be part of it. I think this is a wake-up call. We have to seize the opportunity whenever it shows itself.”

He encouraged those who have been selected from the Northern Region to make the region proud by winning it saying they are all capable young men.
