The final funeral rites (adu’a) of the late football administrator Mr. Jones Alhassan Abu has been held at the family house at Dagbandabba Fong in Tamale on Sunday 22nd August, 2021.
The late doyen of Ghana football died on 10th August, 2021 in Abidjan. He was leader of the delegation for Hasaacas Ladies as they won the maiden edition of the CAF Women’s Champions League for WAFU Zone B.
The funeral rites brought together the crème de la crème of football in Ghana. The Ghana Football Association (GFA) sent a powerful delegation led by President Kurt Edwin Simeon Okraku. The GFA Executive Council member and Upper East Regional Football Association (RFA) Chairman Salifu Zida, Coach Yussif Basigi of Hasaacas Ladies and other coaches in juvenile, division one and premier league as well as Chief Executive Officers (CEO’s) of football clubs of all levels nationwide, Northern Regional Football Association (NRFA) Chairman Alhaj Abu Hassan Mahamadu Rhyzo and his vice Mr. Ibrahim Musah Kessie and NRFA Executive Council members were all in attendance. Old and current players were not left out. The Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA) had their chairman Kudjoe Fianoo in attendance. The board, management and playing body of Division One League side Tamale City (a team he was founding member and Chief Executive Officer) were in attendance. Real Tamale United (RTU) was heavily represented as he was board secretary for a long time. Steadfast FC was also visibly present at the funeral.
Mr. Jones Alhassan Abu’s funeral also had political representation as former president John Dramani Mahama and his running mate in the 2020 elections Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang were in attendance. The Minority Leader in parliament and Member of Parliament (MP) for Tamale South Haruna Iddrisu who has been deeply involved since his death was in attendance. The MP for Tamale Central Mohammed Murtala, National Democratic Congress (NDC) Regional Chairman and other constituency executives were all in attendance. The Northern Regional Minister Mr. Shani Alhassan Sayibu led the government delegation to the funeral. The MP for Yendi Constituency Alhaj Farouk Aliu Mahama and other New Patriotic Party (NPP) big wigs were in attendance. Notable among them was a donation of GH₵1000 by a former NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyapong to the bereaved family.
Speaking at the funeral, GFA President Kurt Okraku disclosed that a memorial lecture series will be instituted in honour of the late Jones Alhassan Abu who he described as a “brother”.
For his part former president John Mahama who was in attendance with his brother Ibrahim Mahama announced a joint donation of GH₵50,000 to the family and asked the youth to emulate the dedication with which Mr. Jones Alhassan Abu went about his duties in life.
The Lepowura Alhaji M.N.D. Jawula who chaired the occasion shared some fond memories about his association with the late Jones Alhassan Abu describing him as a hardworking man who served the game of football sincerely.
The late Jones Alhassan Abu was a member of the Black Stars Management Committee, a member of the Division One League Board, a member of the committee that drafted the current GFA Statutes in 2019 and was campaign Manager for the current GFA president Kurt Okraku during the GFA elective Congress which in effect they won the election in 2019. He was manager of African football legend Abedi Ayew Pele.
