Final funeral rites of late Tolon Naa underway with an array of cultural displays

The late Tolon Naa, Alhassan Sulemana, died in 1990. People from all walks of life most especially sons and daughters from the Tolon traditional area have arrived in the Tolon Township to participate in the event which is expected to be rounded up on Friday March 22.

As part of the funeral rites the traditional leaders of Tolon organized three days compettion on bow and arrowing shooting literally refered to as (Plinga) for the youth which is customary in Dagbon during funeral rites for some prominent chieftaincy positions.

Chief of Yobzeri, Naa Alhassan Dawuni who is championing the competition explained the significance of such activities during performance of a funeral for the late chief of Tolon traditional area.

The Yobzeri community, led by Naa Alhassan Dawuni is the custodians of such important activity and therefore plays a major role in such historic bow and Arrow competition during funerals of every late chief of Tolon.

Naa Alhassan Dawuni stated that the luckier young man who shoots and break the spiritual wood will be awarded a wife by the head of the late chief family.

‘’Everything you see is purely culture that is being passed on. When an elderly person, a prominent personality for that matter, the late Tolon Naa Alhassan Suleman dies, we are enjoined to perform his final funerals rites by showing and displaying such important aspect of traditional Dagbon custom to show how he impacted the lives of his people during his lifetime’’.

‘’It also showcases and exhibits the work of the late chief to public. This is who we are. It is our culture and we perform some rituals before commencing the competition’’. 

The final funeral for the late Tolon Naa will be climaxed with a Muslim prayer on March 22 and a new Tolon chief will be installed after the funeral.

In line with the roadmap to peace in Dagbon as agreed upon together with the three eminent Kings whose efforts together with government saw to the return of peace to the area, all the outstanding funerals of late chiefs in the Dagbon kingdom which are outstanding are to be performed quickly to ensure total peace in Dagbon.
