The General Manager in-charge of Benefits at the Social Security and National Insurance Trust, SNNIT, Frank Mobila, has admonished employees in Ghana, particularly workers under the scheme to begin planning their retirement at early stages by updating their records with the Trust, and not wait until they are due to go home.

According to him, retirement begins the very day an employee starts working and receiving salary. “As a Scheme, we often encourage employees to prioritize their future and that of their dependents by joining the Trust, and making regular contributions and also updating their records at SSNIT.”

Mr. Mobila gave the admonition while making a presentation at the 2026 SSNIT/ Trades Union Congress (TUC) Northern Regional forum in Tamale.

The forum which drew representation from the TUC leadership from the national and more particularly the northern regional and district branches, was held under the theme: ‘Empowered unions, secure futures; deepening pension literacy access in Ghana.”

Under the National Pensions Act, 2008, Act 766, SSNIT has the mandate to manage the workers Tier One, hence the overall objective of the forum was to deepen engagements, brief the TUC members on operations so far and to receive feedback on the scheme.

Mr. Mobila said SNNIT has in 60 years, transformed lives, sustained families and supported in building the economy of Ghana, saying; “SSNIT is the single largest investors on the Ghana Stock Exchange with our asset under management including equities, fixed income, real estate and other alternative investments totaling more than 25 billion cedis.”

Mr. Mobilla thereby encouraged the 80 percent of the population within the informal sector and self-employed people to join SSNIT.

“We have over 2.09 million active contributors with SNNIT and over 261, thousand pensioners. Our oldest pensioner is 115 years and over 3000 others are over 80 years. The highest paid pensioner takes 201,000 cedis every month. Our youngest pensioner is 32 years and this is as a result of the contributor suffering permanent disability. All of these categories I have mentioned, get their monthly pensions paid without fail. We also pay listed beneficiaries, – wife and children and other dependents timeously,” he emphasized.

The ongoing nationwide SSNIT/TUC regional education drive aim to promote and deepen joint pension campaigns, support compliance monitoring, alongside advocating salary consolidation and clearing misconceptions about the scheme.
