DIAMOND DAMBA FESTIVAL FAN GAMES ENDS SUCCESSFULLY

This year’s edition of the Diamond FM Damba Festival fan games ended successfully at the Zogbeli Junior High School Block B Park in Tamale.

The annual event which is in its second season saw Dagombas square up against Moshies whilst the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) faced off against the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The games attracted fans from all walks of life and supporters of the various teams and political party functionaries. The regional executives of both parties such as Mohammed Abdul Salam, regional communications director of NDC, Alhaji Inusah Ankorah, regional youth organizer of the NDC and Tamale Central NDC chairman, Alhaji Issahak Farouk Kanawu who played a fantastic game and assisted the only goal scored by the NDC from a free kick were in attendance.

The NPP had the former regional communications director, Mohammed Abdul kudus, who is now the Director in charge of administration of NPP passing through.

The Regional Minister Honourable Salifu Saeed (aka you can be sure), Minister of Information Kojo Oppong Nkrumah and Regional Chairman of the NPP Alhaji Mohammed Baantima Samba passed through at half time when the NPP were leading 2-1. They all assured their teaming supporters of victory which they eventually had at the end of regulation time. The Northern Regional Chairman of NPP pledged GHC2000 for each of the winners of the two matches.

With two giant trophies at stake, the four teams paraded their best for the showpiece as early as 7:00am.

At the end of the matches, Dagombas emerged victorious over their Moshie counterparts with a 1-0 victory after a second half penalty converted by Sulemana Zuberu.

The icing on the cake was the match between the political parties which drew a large crowd to the venue. The ruling NPP won the game 2-1 after the NDC took the lead earlier on through Imoro Shamsudeen (aka Abbey) who incidentally scored again when the two sides met last year. The NPP equalized through Alhassan Abdallah’s beautifully converted penalty. The winning goal was scored after an error in the NDC defence forcing an own goal by Mohammed Yussif. The technical team of the NPP was led by Mashud Whereabout and former Real Tamale United player Clifford Addai.

The second half presented a lot of chances for the NDC but they failed to convert any of them that came their way. The NPP hanged on to clinch a sweet revenge against their opponents the NDC who won last year’s edition of the Diamond Damba Festival unity games super cup. The technical team of the NDC was led by regional youth organizer Alhaji Inusah Ankorah.

After the parties match, dignitaries at the event spoke extensively on the need for peace and unity in all spheres of life.

Head of department for Dagbani programs at Diamond FM, Alhaji Baba Jemoni spoke on behalf of the Dagombas and thanked everybody for their show of support to their respective team and rather bemoaned the lack of representation of the various traditional leaders in Tamale.

The Moshie Samaale Abdul Mumin Bawah was grateful for the efforts of his team and thanked everybody for attending. He congratulated the Dagombas for winning the trophy.

NDC Regional Communications Director Mohammed Abdul Salam re-emphasized the importance of the games and made light work of NPP’s victory claiming the attendance of the regional minister and the minister of communications made his side “consider” the NPP and allowed them to win.

General Manager of Diamond FM, Mohammed Ibn Abdallah (aka governor of the airwaves) thanked all the supporters and players for showing up for the games and entreated them to turn up again on Monday, 26th November, 2018 which falls on the Damba Belikulisi day for the blood donation exercise aimed at accumulating blood for the Tamale Teaching Hospital blood bank.

The victorious Dagomba team was given a trophy, a crate of canned malt and an amount of GHC500. The NPP took for their prize, a trophy, a crate of canned malt and an amount of GHC 500.
