Defiant commuters interfering with smooth works on Tamale Industrial Area stretch, says Contractors

The contractors working on the industrial area stretch have expressed worry over the lack of co-operation from commuters as work begins.

According to the contractor despite the blockage and the diversions to allow road users to use alternative routes while they fix the stretch, some deviant commuters particularly motorbikes and tricycle operators were still defying the diversions by trespassing thereby distracting works on the site.

It would be recalled that, on June 15 this year, the Northern Regional Director of the Department of Urban Roads, Siisi Darko annoucnced government’s plan to fix deplorable roads within the Tamale Metropolis and Sagnarigu Municipality.

Engineer Darko stated on Diamond Power Drive, that major works will be done on the Lamashegu roundabout, industrial area stretching to the Abedi Pele roundabout, wherefore he appealed to commuters and other road users to co-operate with the contractor when work commences.

However such earlier plea appears to have fallen on deaf ears as the contractor MUNISSCO LTD, is faced with such challenge of contending with defiant commuters since moving to the site last week.

Speaking to Diamond News on condition of anonymity, some of the workers at the MUNISSCO LTD, described the attitude of the defiant commuters as unfortunate, “you have been complaining about the bad nature of the road and now we are here to fix it for you and see how some of the road users are acting irresponsibly. They are not cooperating at all and this is affecting our work” they lamented.

The Tamale Metropolis and Sagnarigu Municipality in the last few years have witnessed a trend of deteriorating roads leading to campaigns by motorists and commuters that ply the Tamale Industrial Area-Nyohini roads to get authorities to fix portions of the roads.

Several accidents have also been recorded on the stretch with two occurring simultaneously a month ago. Also, vehicles break down at some particular sections of the road, which causes unnecessary inconveniences to commuters.
