DDF 2024 Fun Games: Tamale Metro Ghana Blind Union wins Goalball competition against Sagnarigu Municipal

The Tamale Metro branch of the Ghana Blind Union of the Northern Region emerged winners by a score of 10-6 at this year’s Goalball competition as part of the annual Diamond Damba Festival Fun Games which took place at the Magnolia Recreational Center, Saturday 21st September, 2024.

The Diamond Damba Festival activities which is in its seventh year once again brought together the various ‘rival’ tribes in northern Ghana such as Dagombas vs Moshies, Dagaabas vs Frafra, and the two main political parties (the NPP and the NDC) to battle it out in a football and other board games competition. The aim is to ensure fun among them and to also foster peaceful coexistence among these groups in the society.

The events of the day begun with the football matches as the Dagaabas made amends regarding their recent unsuccessful attempts at beating their ‘rivals’ the Frafra. At the end of that game, the Dagaabas won by 4-1.

The second football match saw the Dagombas take on the Moshies in another thrilling encounter which ended 2-1 in favour of the Dagombas. This victory was a revenge for the Dagombas after they lost the match to their ‘rivals’ last year.

The rival political parties’ games saw the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) emerge winners by a 4-1 scoreline against the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC). This is the first time in five years that the NPP has won this fixture after winning the maiden edition in 2017. The NDC has dominated this game winning it in five of the seven events that have taken place so far.

Apart from football, there were other board games that also took place as part of the fun games. In the Ludo competition for females, Suka Fauzia who represented the Moshies emerged first, followed by Ruhaina Asalifu who also represented the Moshies in second. In third and fourth were Sulemana Rafia and Sulemana Mariam respectively who represented the Dagombas.    

The playing cards competition between the political parties saw the NPP winning by 2-1 overall after three rounds of play.

The male sack race for the political parties saw the NDC represented by Mohammed Haruna Fuseini and Iddrisu Abdul Rashid emerge first and second respectively. The NPP’s Mohammed Jinwara and Vohindi-Naa were third and fourth respectively.

In the males’ sack race for the tribes, the Frafra represented by Maxwell Alahana emerged first while the Dagaaba represented by Salifu was second.

The contest between the Dagombas and the Moshies in the sack race for males saw Salifu Tahiru representing the Moshies emerging first while the Dagombas represented by Adam was second.

In the females contest, the Moshies represented by Ruhaina Asalifu and Suka Fauzia were first and second respectively while the Dagombas represented by Sulemana Mariam and Sulemana Rafia were third and fourth respectively.

Several dignitaries in politics, tradition and the society attended the fun games to offer support to Diamond FM and to also see their team perform.

The Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, Alhaj Mohammed Murtala, regional executives of the NDC such as Regional Secretary Mohammed Abdul Salam, Regional Communications Director of the party, Mohammed Sulemana (Chief Agitator) as well as Tamale Central Chairman of NDC, Issahaku Umar Farouk (Chairman FK) who always captains the NDC team for the games were all in attendance.  

The NPP had in attendance the Savannah Regional Chairman of the party, Alhaj Iddrisu Sulemana (Chairman Kalamonia). Chairman Kalamonia made a donation of GH₵ 2,000 to Diamond FM to aid in the event and the upcoming blood donation exercise. Northern Regional Communications Director of the NPP, Yussif Danjummah was also in attendance at the games.

For the tribes, the youth chief for the Frafra, Yinbil Gilbert was in attendance and the leader of the Moshie group Sumaila Abdul Hamid was also in attendance. The Moshies had former Black Queens Coach, Mumuni Gamel in attendance.

The Diamond Damba Festival 2024 activities continue on Monday when two separate donations will be made in the evening.

A donation of food items, consumables, clothing and other items will be made to the Tears of Widows and Orphans Foundation at Kakpagyili in Tamale.

Whilst another donation of baby feeds, diapers, toiletries, detergents and other baby needs will be made to the Anfaani Children’s Home at Kalariga in Tamale.  

The DDF 2024 activities climaxes on Tuesday, 24th September, 2024 with a blood donation exercise at the premises of Diamond FM to feed the blood bank of the major hospitals in Tamale. Aside this, there is also the registration and/or renewal of the health insurance cards of widows, orphans, the disabled and other vulnerable people in society on the same day. A target of registering and renewing for 1000 people in this category are what is earmarked for this year’s edition.
