Committee on Ridge Hospital assault was unfair – GRNMA
The Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), Jefferson Asare, has described the investigative committee’s report on the alleged assault of rotation nurse Rejoice Tsotso Bortei at the Ridge Hospital as unfair.
The incident, which occurred on August 17, 2025, involved a heated confrontation between social media activist Ralph St. William and staff at the Emergency Department. The altercation reportedly stemmed from delays in treating an accident victim.
Following public outcry, the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, constituted a committee to probe the matter. Its report, presented on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, concluded that there was no medical evidence to support claims that Nurse Bortei suffered a shoulder dislocation as a result of physical assault during the incident.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Big Issue on Saturday, August 30, Mr. Asare condemned the findings, insisting that the committee failed to address the root causes of the incident and instead focused on clearing the accused.
“The committee wasn’t fair in their dealings. Their report does not reflect what actually happened on the ground. What about the factors that led to this—the woefully inadequate nursing staff at the emergency unit, reduced from 88 to 44? These are the issues we should be discussing and finding solutions to so our health system can improve. But instead, a committee was set up simply to exonerate someone who entered the hospital and caused mayhem,” he said.
