Still on Ghana Chambers of Mines

Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, Sulemani Koney is calling for the operationalization of the minerals development funds Act that will allow the establishment of the mining community development scheme to ensure rapid development of mining communities across the country.

He explained that, the mining community’s development scheme will allow direct allocation of the minerals funds to host communities thereby funding developmental projects in the mine communities.

Speaking on the Diamond power drive on Thursday morning, Sulemani Koney further explained that, the current minerals Act does not allow any direct allocation of resources for the development of the mining communities.

He urged community members to begin questioning duty bearers on how minerals resources have been used over the years. Mining resources he added should not be used for recurring expenditure but for tangible developmental projects.

Mr. Sulemana Koney also said the Ghana chamber of mines is working to ensure all stakeholders in the mining industry including communities’ benefits from the mining activities.

A director at the Ghana Chamber of mines Ahmed Nantogmah, also explained that, a major objective of the Chamber is to provide thought leadership for national issues related to mining in order to ensure fair distribution of mine resources.

He said mining could be a catalyst for sustainable development in Ghana if the government put in the needed investment in the sector.
