Tamale, Bread bakers to strike over increase in flour price.

Bread Bakers’ Association in the Northern Region are set to begin a sit-down strike from tomorrow, August 24, 2021 over the increase in the price of bread flour.

According to them, the strike is necessitated by the frequent increase in the price of bread flour in the market and other products used in baking bread.

Speaking on behalf of the association, Madam Meliga, owner of the YESU ADOM BAKERY (NEW BASE) claimed that prices of sugar, flour, and margarine in recent times increase almost every two weeks.

“Flour that we were buying at GH¢170 at the beginning of the year is now selling from GH¢230 to 250, not to talk of sugar, margarine, and the other stuff we use” Madam Meliga lamented in an exclusive interview with Diamond News.

She also complained that the increase in prices had imposed an indescribable hardship on their businesses and this has made them unable to break even with the current prices of bread.

Madam Meliga said an attempt to increase the price of bread, attracted wild condemnation from the public.

She however noted that they are embarking on the sit-down strike, to draw the public’s attention to these challenges and the need to increase the price of bread

She indicated that the strike is also to seek government’s intervention to remedy the situation, adding that prices of bread will go up after their strike.
