The Black Stars of Ghana are through to the playoffs stage of the qualifiers for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar after a hard fought 1-0 victory over South Africa at the Cape Coast Stadium on Sunday.
A first half penalty scored by captain Andre Dede Ayew was enough to secure Ghana’s place in the last and final stage of the African qualifiers.
South Africa had come into the game leading Ghana by three points and were hoping for a draw of any kind to qualify. But coach Milovan Rajevac and his charges had other ideas and ended up leapfrogging them from the summit of group G.
Ghana qualified by virtue of the 7goals scored throughout the qualifiers as against South Africa’s 6. The two teams had same goal difference of +4 and also on 13points apiece.
Ghana will now be hoping for a favourable draw when the charade is done after the last group matches at this stage on Tuesday.
The next round will see the ten group winners pitched against each other in a two-legged tie, winners of which will advance to the global mundial next year.
The five teams that will qualify will represent the continent of Africa in Qatar.
