Baba Jamal wins Ayawaso East NDC primary
Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed, Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, has won the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primary for the Ayawaso East Constituency.
The primary was held on Saturday, February 7, 2026, to elect the party’s candidate for the upcoming by-election. Baba Jamal secured 431 votes to defeat Hajia Amina Adam, who polled 399 votes, despite being widely tipped ahead of the contest.
The race featured five aspirants who were cleared after the party’s vetting process. They included Baba Jamal; Mohammed Ramme, the NDC Constituency Chairman; Hajia Amina Adam, widow of the late Member of Parliament; Yakubu Azindow; and Najib Mohammed.
The tightly contested primary attracted significant public interest, particularly amid discussions around campaign conduct. Prior to voting, Baba Jamal’s campaign distributed items such as 32-inch television sets and boiled eggs to delegates—gestures he maintained were acts of goodwill and not intended to influence the outcome.
Baba Jamal will now lead the NDC into the Ayawaso East by-election.
