Women farmers in Karaga area give their MP a thumps up for coming to their aid

Some women farmers in the Karaga District of the Northern Region have commended the Member of Parliament of the area, Dr Mohammed Amin Adam Anta, for showing concerns regarding their livelihoods.

The women in an interview with Diamond News showered praises on the MP after benefiting from the MPs ‘One Woman, One Acre Initiative.’ They indicated that the  intervention was timely because, there was a high demand for tractor services for this year’s farming season which had led to an increase in tractor charges in the area.

The Member of Parliament for Karaga constituency, Dr Mohammed Amin Anta through his ‘One woman, One Acre Initiative’ is supporting 5,000 women farmers in Karaga District by providing farm input subsidies to them. These include ploughing an acre for every woman at no cost.

Madam Asheitu Mohammed, one of the beneficiaries told Diamond News that, “the ‘one woman one acre initiative’ had impacted the lives of women farmers since the MP rolled out the scheme last year.”

She revealed that women in the Karaga District now own farms as a results of the MP’s intervention; “last year, he ploughed for us and we had good yields and this year, we are getting same and we appreciate his effort towards empowering us through farming,” she commented.

Meanwhile the MP in his earlier interview with Diamond News said his outfit had carried out a study on poverty profile in the area which showed that women were more affected by abject poverty, and “if we have to tackle poverty, we need to look at the most vulnerable,” hence the targeting of women.

Dr. Amin Adam was hopeful the support will be extended to cover up to 20,000 women farmers in the constituency soon.

“I am doing this because I am able to source funds from NGOs and friends and I will continue to support women farmers every year to enable us eradicate poverty in my constituency,” he stated.
