“WANTON DISREGARD FOR ROAD SAFETY IS HAVING A TOLL ON THE NORTHERN REGION WITH AN INCREASE IN ROAD CRASHES,” SAYS ALEXANDER AYATA

Statistics indicates that 147 persons have died in the Northern Region through road accidents between January to September 2018.

This is an increase by 35 percent from the 2017 figure where 95 deaths from road crashes were recorded.

The Northern regional director of the Road safety commission, Alexander Ayata who disclosed this at a stakeholder engagement in Tamale was worried over the wonton disregard for road safety regulations.

He revealed that, 110 out the 147 death recorded during the year are persons below 18 years and bemoaned increasing use of engine powered commercial tricycles by minors.

The regional road safety Boss also lamented over the interference from politicians, religious leaders and other opinion leaders in the cause of arrest and prosecution of road safety offenders.

Stakeholder were unhappy with the illegal conversion of the MELCOM, GOIL fueling station, the bank of Ghana road as loading stations by private transport companies and the yellow-yellow riders.

The Metro Police commander, Chief Supt. Anthony Appiah pledged the Police’s commitment to public education on the road safety in order to increase the knowledge of citizens before enforcement of the law.

Leaders of NPP and the NDC who were sighted for always interfering in the work of the Police during prosecutions, however failed to show up at meeting. There was no representation from the Tamale Metro Assembly too.
