The Men and Women football teams of the University for Development Studies (UDS) both won gold at the just ended 8th Mini Ghana University Sports Association (Gusa) Games in Cape Coast.
The men football team defeated the University of Education, Wineaba (UEW) in the final played on Thursday by 2-0 to win the ultimate. A goal in either half from Alhassan Abdul Wadud and the tournaments top scorer David Abagna sealed the win for Coach Shaibu Ibrahim Tanko’s side. David Abagna therefore took the golden boot with 7goals in the competition.
The women team won all their matches against all the other participating universities to emerge winners of the football women gold.
The athletics saw another impressive performance from the UDS team as they had a clean swoop in the men 100m final winning the first, second and third positions. The women took first and third in the women’s 200m final whilst the University of Cape Coast (UCC) took the second position.
In the overall medal ranking, UCC came tops with 20 gold, 11 silver and 6 bronze. UDS came second with 13 gold, 11 silver and 12 bronze medals. The University of Ghana (UG) came third with 4 goal, 9 silver and 9 bronze medals to their name. Fourth was UEW with 1 gold, 5 silver and 9 bronze. In fifth was the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) with 2 silver and 1 bronze medal. In sixth, seventh and eighth were the University of Professional Studies (UPSA), University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) and the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) respectively with no medals.
The Mini Gusa Games follows the main Gusa Games that was hosted in Tamale by UDS last year.
