UDS MAKES GHANA PROUD

The University for Development Studies (UDS) has made Ghana proud at the 9th All Africa University Games (FASU Games), 2018 hosted by Mekelle University in the City of Mekelle, Ethiopia. The Games runs from 1st July and ends on 8th July 2018, with a closing ceremony but actual competition was for 5 days from 2nd – 6th July.

The UDS team placed fourth in the game’s overall rankings with 7gold, 4silver and 2bronze medals out of thirty-seven (37) universities that won medals. The entire games featured a total of fifty-eight (58) participating universities from across Africa.

UDS finished ahead of the other Ghanaian participating university, that is the University of Ghana (UG) who finished fifth on the medal table.

The Games saw the Ndejje University of Uganda placing first with 10gold, 4silver and 5bronze medals. University of Johannesburg in South Africa finished second with 9gold, 1silver and 2bronze medals whilst the Addis Ababa University of Ethiopia edged third with 8gold, 6silver and 11bronze medals to finish the top five teams at the games.

Disciplines competed in included athletics, badminton, 3×3 basketball, basketball, chess, football, volleyball, handball, table tennis and tennis.

In the athletics competition, UDS’s Elizabeth Azuure came third in the 10,000m women event behind athletes from Ethiopia who came first and second respectively. Christiana Bakika of UDS took the gold medal in the 400m hurdles women event ahead of Abobi Calavi of University of Benin and an athlete from the Makelle University of Ethiopia. Agyei Salomey of UDS took silver in the 800m women event while Eric Annobil of UDS took gold in the 400m men’s hurdles event. Another clean swoop was the 200m men event where Sarfo Ansah of UDS took gold whilst his compatriot Derrick Sarkodie took bronze in the same event, the silver medal went to the Tshwane University of Technology in South Africa.

It will be recalled that UDS had another impressive showing at the Ghana University Sports Association Games in Tamale a few months ago and have replicated that gesture thanks to the proactive approaches of the Director of Sports Ibrahim Tanko.

The team is expected back in Tamale on Tuesday afternoon.
