The Mion District Assembly engages media on social norms communication for sanitation and behavioral change.

The Mion District Assembly with has held a days’ engagement with a cross section of the media in Tamale on using social norms communication materials for sanitation and behavioral change.

The purpose of the engagement was to discuss thoroughly with media practitioners, the social norms communication materials in their quest to help end open defection and ensure proper sanitation in the district.

District Social Welfare and Community Development Officer Sani Shahabu told Diamond News the social norms communication materials project is a pilot project been implemented in partnership with UNICEF in the Mion district.

He explained that, the project is been implemented in two communities in the district which are yet to attain the Open Defecation free status.

Sani Shahabu also called on traditional rulers and opinion leaders to become sanitation ambassadors to help improve the health of the populace.  

Mion and Bunkpurugu are the two districts receiving funding from UNICEF to implement the social norms communication materials on sanitation and behavioural change project.

The project seek to involve key stakeholders, community leaders and opinion leaders and influential persons within the communities to campaign for behavioural change that will lead to improved sanitation and an end to open defecation in the various communities.
