Techiman Is Capital of New Bono East Region

The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has announced Techiman as the capital of the newly created Bono East region.

He disclosed this Wednesday at the Jubilee House in Accra, at a ceremony to present Constitutional Instruments (CI 116) to give effect to the creation of new regions.

The President also appointed Mr. Evans Opoku-Bobie, Brong Ahafo regional minister as the caretaker Minister for Bono East.

Speaking at the ceremony, President Akufo-Addo said: “Techiman has been chosen as the capital of the Bono East Region.”

The chiefs and people of the Nkoranza Traditional Area had earlier accused the Deputy Minister of Regional Reorganisation and Development, Mr. Martin Adjei Mensah Korsah of working for Techiman, where he hails from, to be named as the capital.

According to the chiefs, Nkoranza has a lot of advantages including its central location and close proximity to almost all towns in the new region than Techiman.

The chiefs alleged at a press conference on Monday, 11 February 2019 that the government sidelined Nkoranza from a meeting with the traditional leaders and District Chief Executives at Techiman on Thursday and, so, they perceive a well-orchestrated plan to sideline Nkoranza in the naming of a regional capital.

Nana Akufo-Addo, however, assured the people that development of Bono East Region will spread across all the towns and villages.

Techiman is a leading market town in South Ghana.

Techiman has a settlement population of 104,212 people in 2013.

It is located at a historical crossroads of trade routes and the Tano River and serves as the capital of the Techiman Municipal District.
