The Tamale Teaching Hospital has achieved a three-year decline in maternal mortality from 899 per 100,000 births in 2016 to 597 per 100,000 births at the end of year 2018.
Out of the 47 deaths recorded at the hospital, 85% were referrals from peripheral facilities within catchment areas of the TTH whilst 8.5% were also a result of home deliveries.
Chief Executive Officer of the Tamale Teaching Hospital, Dr. David Z. Kolibilla who disclosed this at the 2018 annual performance review meeting, called for strengthened collaboration between the TTH and other referring facilities to reduce cases of maternal mortality in the region.
Dr. Kolibilla also lamented over the delays in payments of claims by the NHIA coupled with the reduced financial support from central government that has severely affected the finance of the hospital.
He also lamented over a poor public image about the hospital which had been intensified by recent series of bad press and vigilantism thereby affecting the hospital’s drive to attract critical staff and clients.
In a speech read for him, the Northern regional Minister, Salifu Sa-eed said the Tamale Teaching Hospital remain the backbone to providing tertiary healthcare to the people of Northern Ghana and neighboring Burkina Faso hence Government will continue to invest in meeting the health needs of the people.
The review meeting will afford management, staff and other stakeholders the opportunity to discuss and share success stories of 2018 and find solutions to the myriad of challengers facing the hospital.
The 2018 end of year review meeting is on the theme ”Improving patients experience through good governance and leadership”.
