Tamale readies itself to become Ghana’s capital for Independence day Parade

The Northern regional capital, Tamale is set to become the capital of the nation on 6th March as it hosts this year’s National Independence Day parade.

Ghana will be exactly 62 years on 6th March this year after it gained independence from the British Colony in 1957.

The Northern Region is the first region outside Accra, the national capital to host this prestigious annual parade since independence. Several important dignitaries including the President of Niger, Mahamadou Issoufou would grace the occasion.

Traditional rulers, youth groups and the indeed the general public in the area are feverishly preparing to assist government officials in the region to record a memorable, catchy and remarkable event.

The theme for the 62nd independence parade is: “Celebrating Peace and Unity.”  Tamale and the adjourning Sanarigu Municipality are already charged, eager and anxious for Wednesday’s historic parade. Diamond News sample thoughts about the celebration from some residents.

Already the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium venue of this year`s independence day parade, has been given massive facelift and the entire vicinity has been inundated with various forms of decorations.

The ceremonial street is awash with the national colors and roads that have for several months being left with potholes are being fixed and receiving urgent attention.

Businesses are cashing in with all kinds of national paraphernalia. Various shapes and sizes of Shirts, miniature flags, T-shirts, caps, key-holders and socks with colours of Ghana flag are becoming hotcakes around the Tamale metropolis.

In a related development The Independence Day parades which were supposed to have taken place in all districts within the Northern Region have been cancelled for this year. All districts will instead be at the Northern Regional capital Tamale for the national parade on March 6.

According to the Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, this is to enable all Districts and Municipal Chief Executives, Directors of Education, staff, and school children to participate in the national parade.
