Tamale Police hunt for two persons for assaulting NIA officials and vandalizing registration equipment at Sabonjida.

Police in the Northern Region has launched a manhunt for two persons who assaulted NIA officials and vandalized registration equipment at a registration centre in Sabonjida, a suburb of Tamale.

The two unknown men with one Ali Imoro stormed the Saabonjidi registration centre on Tuesday morning and demanded the NIA officials close a backdoor that they believed was aiding the officials to register their relatives and friends much to the neglect of the long queue at the centre.

This led to a confrontation between the NIA officials and the three persons.

The two unknown men, however, escaped arrest when the regional SWAT team was called in to restore calm at the centre.

The armed SWAT team only managed to arrest Ali Imoro who was subsequently arraigned before the Tamale District Court one and remanded into Police custody to reappear on Thursday, October 24, 2019. 

State Prosecutor, Sergeant Mohammed Sulemana presenting the facts in court said the NIA officials refused to take directives from the accused persons who were at the centre.

Sergeant Sulemana pleaded with the court to remand the accused person into prison custody for a week to aid the Police carry out further investigation and to enable Ali, help in identifying the two suspects.

Lawyer for the accused person, Alidu Abdul-Ruaf told the court enough sureties were available to enable the court to grant his client bail, but the court declined.

He also told the court his client only met his accomplices at the registration centre and therefore could not assist Police in identifying them.

The Presiding Judge His Lordship Issifu Amadu before his ruling urged the Police to speed up with their investigation and not delay the court process.

He said he was mindful of the basic rights of the accused person and therefore will not unlawfully keep him in Police custody.
