ROAD SAFETY COMMISSION AND POLICE MTTD TO EMBARK ON A RIGOROUS EXERCISE SOON IN THE NORTHERN REGION AHEAD OF THE CHRISTMAS

The National road safety commission together with the MTTD of the Ghana Police services would soon begin rigorous enforcement of road safety regulations in the Northern Region ahead of the Christmas.

According to the Northern regional director of the road safety commission, Alexander Aayata, the intervention has become necessary to help deal with the increasing road crashes in the region.

At a stakeholder engagement in Tamale, he revealed that 147 persons have so far lost their lives through road crashes in the region and the number may increase if immediate measures are not put in place to check safety on the roads.

Alexander Ayata indicated that, the commission together with the Police will first undertake public education on road safety before arrest and prosecution of offenders.

The Metro Police commander of the Ghana Police service Chief Sutp. Anthony Appiah for his part acknowledged the contribution of motorbikes and engine powered tricycles to easing transportation difficulties of most people in the region, he however bemoaned the use of these tricycles by minors and unlicensed persons which results in road crashes.

Chief Supt. Appiah also said the Police would increase patrols and surveillance across the region ahead of the Christmas season to protect lives and property.
