President Akuffo Addo talks of his government’s achievements in addressing Covid-19, but there has been a surge in the death toll in Ghana’s count

President Nana Akufo-Addo says the wearing of face masks, social distancing, and enhanced hygiene protocols are still obligatory. He said the phased opening up of the country put an obligation and responsibility on each person to remain vigilant and respect the COVID-19 protocols that “have become part and parcel of our daily routine”.

President Akufo-Addo in his 15th address on measures taken against the spread of Coronavirus, asked Ghanaians to wear the face masks correctly, since it had become the new normal requirement of daily existence until the virus disappeared.

He said abiding strictly by the COVID-19 protocols was also the best way that the country could restore, as quickly as possible, “the blessings of normalcy for which we all yearn”.

President Akuffo Addo said as at July 24, the number of active cases that stood at 3,307, and as at August 15, this had reduced to 1,847 adding that “it is a clear indication that Government policies are working”,.

Meanwhile Ghana’s COVID-19 death toll surged to 239 from a previous 231, following the confirmation of eight new deaths in five regions across the country by the Ghana Health Service.

The decease, all but three had underlying health conditions including hypertension, Retroviral Infection, chronic kidney disease and diabetes mellitus, among others.

The latest update, showed a further decline in the country’s active cases to 1,847 from 1,939, as at Sunday, August 16. This follows the clinical recovery and discharge of a total of 40,567 persons.

The update further confirmed 121 new cases of infection across the country, bringing the country’s cumulative cases also to 42,653. The new infections are from tests conducted on August 15.

It further explained that 16 cases were in severe conditions, with six in critical condition, and three on ventilators.

The active cases, the Ghana Health Service said, were being managed in treatment sites, isolation centers across the country, while some were under home management.
