President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has condemned the acts
of violence that marred the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election on Thursday, 31
January 2019, describing it as “regrettable”, adding that the governing New
Patriotic Party (NPP) “from which my Government was born, would never dream of
competing with any other political party in unleashing violence on the Ghanaian
people”.
A group of macho men believed to be security agents fired into the crowd at the
La-Bawaleshie JHS polling station, injuring six persons.
The main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) pulled out of the
election due to the shooting.
Reacting to the shooting incident, President Nana Akufo-Addo, in a statement,
said: “The isolated incident of violence, which occurred in the early stages of
the election, was unfortunate and regrettable, and I condemn it in no uncertain
terms.”
Nana Akufo-Addo noted that a by-election should be a peaceful and happy event,
no matter how competitive.
He noted that the police is committed to conducting a rapid inquiry into the
matter, and expect all persons who are found culpable, at the end of the
process, to face the full rigours of the law.
Still on Security: The Ministry of the Interior has renewed the curfew hours on Chereponi and Saboba Townships and their environs from 1600 hours to 0700 hours.
A statement issued by the Ministry said the renewal of the curfew hours was upon the advice of the Northern Regional Security Council and by Executive Instrument.
It said the ban on carrying arms, ammunition or any offensive weapon was still in force and any person found with any such weapon would be arrested and prosecuted.
The statement urged the people to exercise restraint in the face of the challenges confronting them and use non-violent means to ensure peace in the area.
