Planting for food and jobs programme has made remarkable progress in Ghana’s food security and sufficiency quest, says Minister of State.

A Minister of State, in charge of Agriculture Dr. Gyiele Nurah has outlined the Ministry’s achievement over the past 2 and half years, with the most remarkable being the planting for food and jobs programme.

He mentioned that, production levels for maize, rice, soyabean, sorghum and other crops including tree crops have increased and Ghana has begun exporting food produce to neighboring countries.

Delivering the Keynote address at the launch of the 9th edition of the annual pre-harvest exhibition and conference in Tamale, Dr. Gyiele Nurah said about 16,700 extension officers have been recruited and posted across the country by government to boost agricultural extension delivery.

This move by the government, he explained had resulted in a massive increase in an extension agent to farmer ratio from 1 is to 1,908 in 2016 to 1 is to 706 in 2019.

The Netherlands Ambassador to Ghana, Ron Strikker said the Netherlands is the second-biggest exporter of agricultural produce in the world and urged Ghana to emulate their success story by investing in innovation, technology and machinery.

He said the Dutch Government felt it is a responsibility to share knowledge in ensuring there is food security and also to ensure healthy and sustainable production and therefore assured of his governments’ readiness to support Ghana in the area of agriculture.

Ron Strikker urged stakeholders to work at transforming agriculture in Ghana to attract the youthful population saying that farming should be market driven, modernized and seen as a business.

Executive Director for Agrihouse foundation, Alberta Nana Akyaa Akosa, in an address admonished participants to adopt new technologies and best practices that will help improve their production levels to ensure food availability and security in Ghana.

The 2019 annual pre-harvest exhibition and conference is expected to bring together over 3,000 farmers, value chain actors and agribusiness owners to share ideas and discuss objectives measures to ensure structured and sustainable market access in Ghana.
