Overcrowding at Tamale Central Prisons affecting the health conditions of inmates

The Tamale Central Prisons, built in 1914 with holding capacity of 78 prisoners, currently has over 200 prisoners.

According to authorities at the facility, this current situation is affecting the health of many of the inmates due to overcrowding at the Tamale Prisons, especially at the remand section.

Deputy Superintendent of Prisons, at the Tamale central Prisons, Kennedy Gbanda, revealed that the reformation aspect of the service has seriously been affected due to the increasing number of inmates at the facility, saying the inmates are not well attended to due to inadequacy of resources.

Speaking to Diamond News DSP Gbanda attributed the current situation at the Tamale central prison to huge numbers of persons on remands at the prison cells.

He indicated that the number of inmates had increased resulting from the judiciary’s decision to dump bailable offenders into remands cells.

In his interview with Diamond News, DSP Gbanda appealed to benevolent organizations nd individuals to be concerned and interested in the day-to-day activities of facility by assisting prisons authorities to take good care of the inmates.
