Opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has directed that all party flag should fly at half-mast in protest over violence that took place in Ayawaso on Thursday.

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has directed that all party flag across the country should fly at half-mast in protest over an electoral related violence that took place in the Ayawaso West Worgon constituency during a bye- election on Thursday.

The National chairman of the party, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo at a media brief to announce the party’s decision to withdraw from a bye-election at the Ayawaso West Wogon alleged that 7 NDC members sustained gun wounds as results of gunshots from persons believed to be national security operatives.

Some macho men in NSC-branded t-shirts who are suspected to be members of a vigilante group attacked some voters at the La-Bawaleshie Presby JHS polling station on Thursday and fired gunshots in the air during voting in the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-elections. Ningo Prampram Member of parliament, Sam George was slapped in the ensuing confusion.

Addressing journalist and party supporters at the part headquarters in Accra, Ofosu Ampofo, describe the incident at the Ayawaso West as an attack on democracy in Ghana, and urged party supporters not to fight back, as the party will fight back at the appropriate time.

Some angry NDC party supporters also expressed their displeasure with the shooting incidents at Ayawaso west.

In a reaction , Yaw Boabeng Asamoah is the communications director of the NPP, described the entire incident as a premeditated action by their rivals; describing it as NDC’s way of running away from an impending defeat.

Meanwhile The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Mrs. Jean Mensa, described the skirmishes that occurred during the by-election, as unfortunate and must be condemned.

Four candidates officially contested the poll to replace Emmanuel Kyeremanteng Agyarko, who passed on in November, 2018. They are Ms Lydia Seyram Alhassan of the New Patriotic Party, William Dowokpor of the Progressive People’s Party and Clement Boadi of the Liberal Party of Ghana. The NPP has won the seat since Ghana’s Fourth Republic was inaugurated, except for 1992, in which it did not contest.
