OPEN DEFECATION REMAINS A THREAT TO GHANA’S ATTAINMENT OF THE SDGS BY 2030. THAT IS A CAUTION FROM THE DCE FOR TATALE/SANGULI

The District Chief Executive for Tatale-Sanguli, Thomas Mbomba has said Open Defecation (OD) if not tackled with urgency could become a threat to Ghana’s attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by the year 2030.

According to him, the attainment of ODF status across Ghana is prerequisite for goal 6 of the SDGs which is aimed at achieving access to adequate equitable sanitation for all and end open defecation by the year 2030.

Speaking at a durbar to mark the regional commemoration of the world toilet day on the theme “when nature calls,” at Tatale, Thomas Mbomba called for collaborative efforts among development partners to fashion out strategies to ensure the quick attainment of ODF in Ghana.

The Tatale DCE also revealed that, the assembly had begun supporting the “poorest of the poor” including physically challenge persons to enable them construct their own latrines and assured that, the district will not relent on its efforts to achieving ODF status before the December 31, 2019.

Chief of field Office at UNICEF Margarat Gwada assured the support of UNICEF towards the attainment of ODF across Ghana and encouraged the locals to build and use latrine to ensure their healthy living.

Paramount chief of the Tatale traditional area, Ubore Yankoso ll, commanded efforts of the district assembly and other development partners including UNICEF in the fight against open defecation in the district.

He however challenged leaders of the remaining 17 communities to ensure all household within their jurisdiction acquire a latrine before December 31, 2018.

A handful of households within 17 out of 179 communities in the Tatale-Sanguli district are yet to acquire household latrine to enable the district attain the Open Defecation Free status.
