The Northern Regional Peace Council has been inaugurated in Tamale with a call to council members to show strong commitment towards strengthening national unity.
Most Reverend Vincent Sowah Boi-Nai, member of the National Peace Council, said the Council is required to increase and create awareness on the use of non-violent strategies to prevent, manage and resolve emerging conflicts in the region.
He said the country has been confronted with numerous chieftaincy disputes, religious conflicts, land as well as border concerns amongst others.
A conflict mapping exercise carried out by the National Peace Council in collaboration with the University of Cape Coast, showed that every region in the country is challenged by numerous and diverse conflicts”, he said.
He called on the incoming members to be dedicated to the task ahead since it was critical for the development of the society.
Deputy Northern Regional Minister, Solomon Boah, called on the members to ensure a high sense of neutrality in carrying out their mandates. He charged members to perform their duties devoid of personal interest saying “allow the interest of the region to supersede all other interests”.
The Northern Regional Council has 13 members and they are expected to amongst others, to counsel the Regional Security Council on matters relating to the prevention, resolution and management of conflicts as well as the maintenance of peace in the area.
They would also engage in public education, create awareness of conflicts indicators within the region and make recommendations to the Regional Co-ordinating Council.
