NORTHERN REGION GRABS TWO AWARDS IN THIS YEAR’S FA CUP HONOURS

Northern Region’s referee Awal Mohammed and Baba Nuhu Mallam received awards at the 2017 MTN FA Cup awards on Wednesday night. Referee Awal Mohammed was adjudged the best referee of the year after some impressive performance in the competition in the year under review.

For Baba Nuhu Mallam, he was given a special award for his role in organizing the final of the FA Cup between Kumasi Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak in Tamale back in October, 2017. Kotoko emerged winners of the trophy after beating Hearts 3-1.

This is the second time in a row Awal Mohammed has won this award after picking up last season’s own in the same competition.

Referee Awal Mohammed is the technical instructor of the Referees Association of Ghana (RAG), Northern Regional chapter.

Baba Nuhu Mallam is an executive committee member of the Northern Regional Football Association (RFA), chairman of the RFA’s Women’s Football Committee as well as a developmental coach. He also serves as the Assistant Coach of the National Female Under-17 team, the Black Maidens of Ghana.

Other award recipients’ on the night included; Former Asante Kotoko coach, Steven Pollack emerged as the Coach of the Year. Pollack beat former Accra Hearts of Oak coach Frank Nuttall to win the coveted honor. He guided Asante Kotoko to clinch the title by beating arch-rivals Hearts of Oak 3-1 in the grand finale at the then Tamale Sports Stadium in October last year.

Pollack’s award was received on his behalf by former Kotoko Board member and popular benefactor, Alhaji Abu Lamini. Also on the stage to help Alhaji Lamini receive Pollack’s award was Kotoko’s Accra Representative, Thomas Boakye Agyeman.

Accra Hearts of Oak midfielder Winful Cobbinah was crowned the Most Valuable Player (MvP) at the awards night.

Cobbinah beat off competition from Asante Kotoko’s Saddick Adams and Isaac Amoah from Amidaus Professionals to win the top accolade of the night.

Although Saddick Adams missed an opportunity to win two awards on the night, he was awarded a joint Top Scorers award alongside Raphael Ocoloo. Both players scored 10 goals each in last season’s MTN FA Cup campaign.

As part of their award, the two players received a citation and a home theatre set each from the Ghana Football Association (GFA).
This is the seventh edition of the MTN FA Cup awards which is to honour outstanding and deserving players, coaches, match officials and other significant individuals in every season the competition is played

At the event, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Ghana’s largest telecommunication network MTN, Ebenezer Twum-Asante, promised that the telecommunication giant will spend over three million cedis on sports development in Ghana in 2018.

He said the amount does not only cover the FA Cup competition but also covers other clubs that MTN sponsors.
