NEDCo to embark on serious debt recovery and mass disconnection of power thieves

The Northern Electricity Distribution Company NEDco is to embark on a massive tracking of illegal electrical connections at residential properties and institutions which had led to the company losing millions of Ghana cedis in the Northern Region.

The exercise would official begin from July 1st, 2019 to retrieve all arrears owed them by consumers and also to disconnect consumers who tap electricity illegally.

The area manager of NEDco, John Okai Yenmoah, who disclosed this exclusively to Diamond News, stated that NEDco incur losses when people engage in illegal connections and unauthorized re-connection of officially disconnected premises.

He explained that with illegal direct connection, customers connect electricity supply to their premises without meters, adding that some customers/applicants move legally installed meters from original locations to other places without the approval of NEDco

It is suspected that some unscrupulous elements in NEDco/VRA are alleged to have teamed up with some electricians and contractors to carry out the nefarious activities in the region.

Speaking to Diamond News, the area manager appealed to the public to support the upcoming the project by the NEDco to eliminate illegal connections in order to address the revenue losses to the provider distributor.

‘’Management of NEDco would be working in collaboration with various stakeholders include Ghana police service, Judicial service, in fact we are bringing everybody onboard to support the project, we want to intensify our monitoring by eliminating illegal connection.’’ he stated.

’Electricity is very important if we want economic development and so anything that would affect electricity availability must be taken very seriously because it is not only going to affect one person if we don’t have the money to buy enough power to supply, everybody will complain. Recently when there was a problem within GRIDco there were complains, but when the power is available we don’t want to pay. Now you must pay for every unit of power you use. if you are not  ready to pay you don’t used it. You have to learn energy conservation by using what you can pay for!’’ the NEDco Area Manager stressed.
