MUKARAMA ABDULAI NOMINATED FOR SWAG FOOTBALLER OF THE YEAR AWARD

Black Maidens captain and Northern Ladies striker, Mukarama Abdulai has been nominated for this year’s Sports Writer’s Association of Ghana (SWAG) footballer of the year in the female category. This was made known on Monday at the launch of this year’s SWAG awards gala to be held on 11th May, 2019.

After an impressive qualifying campaign for the female national Under 17 team, the Black Maidens captain produced another top notch performance at the FIFA Under 17 World Cup in Uruguay last year.

Not only was she the top scorer of the tournament with seven goals, she also ended the competition as the third best player winning the Bronze Ball in the process.

Mukarama also made it to the initial list of CAF female player of the year for 2018 even though she did not make it to the final short list. South African striker and top scorer during the African Women Cup of Nations
Thembi Kgatlana won the CAF award.

For the current SWAG award, she has to fend off competition from Faustina Ampah and Grace Asantewaa in order to win it.

For the Male footballer of the year, the likes of Thomas Partey, John Antwi, Felix Annan, Kassim Nuhu and Joseph Addo have been nominated.

The annual SWAG awards will be seeing the 44th edition which also honours the Sports Personality of the Year. Nominees for this category has Isaac Dogboe, Thomas Partey and Anthony Baffour.

At the launch, SWAG president Kwabena Yeaboah also disclosed that this year’s event will see a journalist honoured in the Sports Journalists journalist of the year award.

There is no denying the fact that Mukarama Abdulai deserves this award for a stellar performance this year. But until the awards ceremony is held, it may be too close to call.
