Minerals Commission stops Shaanxi mining operations

The Minerals Commission has directed Shaanxi Mining GhanaLimited to suspend its operations at the Gbane mine site with immediate effect.

The directive follows the death of some 14 small-scale miners (galamseyers) who died through suffocation while mining in some pits, following the detonation of explosives at the mine in the TalensiDistrict of the Upper East Region.

the incident happened on Wednesday dawn after Shaanxi detonated the explosives to mine ore.

In their attempt to steal some of the ore, however, the illegal miners got suffocated in the pits.

Some of the miners died instantly after inhaling deadly fumes from the blast.
