Media Coalition against Galamsey, engages media practitioners in Tamale

Head of underground water unit at the Council for scientific and industrial research, (CSIR) Dr. Anthony Duah has urged media practitioners to continually pursue the agenda to ending illegal mining activities in the country.

According to Dr. Duah, the harmful effects of the illegal activities of galaseyers who use heavy machinery and chemicals cannot be over emphasized hence the need for all stakeholders to work together to ending the practice.

Speaking to a cross section of the media during an engagement, Dr. Duah bemoaned the failure of the law enforcement agencies to deal with real miscreants behind practice and called for greater media intervention in exposing the culprits, regardless of their status in society.

The media engagement, which was at the instance of the media Coalition against Galamsey, and the Ghana independent broadcasters association (GIBA) and the GJA, sought to enhance the capacity of journalists in the northern region to be abreast with the devastating effects of the illegal mining and also report responsibly on issues surrounding mining activities.

Kofi Larweh is with Ghana Community Radio Network, and a member of the media coalition against Galamsey. He spoke to Diamond news on the effects of Galamsey, and other illegal activities such as sand winning.
