A Minister of State in Charge of Agriculture, Dr. Gyile Nurah has said agriculture holds the fortunes of Ghana’s economic growth hence government would increase investment in the sector.
According to him job creation and sustained food security were the positives to be derived from the agricultural sector.
Government, he added is therefore focusing on strategies that would modernize the sector and position it as a major vehicle for the transformation of the economy.
Speaking at the 8th annual Pre-harvest agribusiness exhibition and conference event in Tamale, Dr. Nurah said the agricultural sector in Ghana employs over 45% of the active population majority being women.
The 8th annual Pre-harvest agribusiness exhibition and conference event seeks to promote business partnership among the value chain actors such as farmers, buyers, processors, input dealers, financial institutions and policy makers.
It also seeks to link farmers to markets and get the agribusiness sector to influence transformation by promoting public private sector partnership and serve as a platform for investment opportunities.
The Northern Regional Minister, Salifu Sa-eed in an address said Agriculture needed to be prioritized regardless the cost, hence the government, he added is committed to any initiative that will lessen the burden on farm-families. He urged the youth to venture into farming and apply scientific knowledge to ensure maximum yield.
For her part, Executive director of Agri-house foundation, Alberta Nana Akyaa said contemporary technology application in the agricultural sector must be taken seriously to enhance the potentials in the agriculture sector.
The Pre-harvest agribusiness exhibition and conference event is under the theme “Agribusiness in the Northern region, the future starts now.”
