GOVERNMENT REPLIES FIFA LETTER

The Ministry of Youth and Sports has responded to FIFA’s threat to ban Ghana from all international football related activities if a court case initiated by the Ghana Government to liquidate the assets of the GFA is not dropped by August 27.

In a two page Press Release issued on 14th August, 2018 and signed by the Sports Minister, Isaac Asiamah, Ghana has asked the world football governing body for further engagements “to explore a mutually acceptable route to achieving our common goal.”

The Sports Ministry’s responds also highlights the fact that the government of Ghana is not interested in interfering in the running of football, however, it is responsible to ensure that corrupt practices are not condoned.

The ministry’s response outlined a 12point steps and action plans by government to ensure corruption is out of the game of football in Ghana.

The release addressed to FIFA secretary general Fatma Samoura said, “Your letter dated 13th August, 2018, with reference number SG/nak/vem/Ini, and addressed to Dr. Kofi Amoah, Head of the CAF/FIFA Liaison Team, has been referred to the Government of Ghana (Gog) and we respond as follows:” This is followed by the 12point responses.

FIFA had threatened to ban Ghana in a letter dated 13th August, 2018 and addressed to chairman of the liaison team and signed by secretary general, Fatma Samoura, the Bureau of the FIFA council stated its disappointment at the ongoing legal tussle between government and the GFA.  FIFA has thus asked that the case be withdrawn from court which means plans to dissolve the GFA should be discarded or Ghana will be banned by 27th August, 2018.

If government fails to heed this warning from FIFA and Ghana is banned, the national under 17 female team, the Black Maidens will not participate in the upcoming FIFA Under 17 female World Cup in Uruguay later this year. The national under 20 male team, the Black Satellites will not be able to participate in the African Youth Championships later this year. The Black Stars will not play the upcoming African Cup of Nations Qualifier next month. Ghana will not host nor participate in the African Women Championships tournament later this year, even as reports indicate the hosting rights has been taken away. Aduana Stars will not be able to continue with their CAF Confederations Cup group stages matches again.
