The Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII) has described the murder of an
investigative journalist with Tiger Eye PI, Ahmed Hussein-Suale, as an
attack on the fight against corruption in the country.
The anti-graft body said not only will the
murder create unnecessary fear and panic among well-meaning Ghanaians
“who are desirous of joining the fight against corruption”, but also
dent the image of Ghana’s growing democracy.
“As the enormous contribution of
investigative journalists and the media in general to the fight against
corruption cannot be over-emphasised, GII joins all other
anti-corruption civil society organisations (CSOs) and media
institutions in Ghana and the world over to condemn this dastardly act,”
the GII said in a statement.
To end the attacks on journalists, GII said:
“The police and all other appropriate state agencies must swiftly
investigate this heinous crime and make the perpetrators face the full
rigours of the law.”
Ahmed, who was part of the investigative
team that produced the Number 12 documentary, which uncovered rot in
African football and led to the resignation of Ghana Football
Association President Kwesi Nyantakyi as well as the suspension of over
40 referees, was shot three times, twice in the chest and another in the
neck by unknown assailants late Wednesday night at Madina in Accra
while driving home
