GBEWAA FC QUALIFIES FOR DIVISION ONE LEAGUE

Yendi based Gbewaa FC have qualified to represent the Northern Region in this year’s Division One League. Gbewaa FC’s qualification comes as a result of the conclusion of this year’s Sub-Middle League on Sunday after the Northern Regional Division Two League had earlier wrapped up with Tamale Real Republicans, Gbewaa FC, Sankara Nationals and FC Tamale making it to the last qualifying round.

Gbewaa FC is a community based team in Yendi along with other clubs such as Sankara Nationals, Great Amphibians, Yendi Soccer Heroes, Kuga Soccer Professionals and Yendi United Football Academy (YUFA).

With this feat, Gbewaa FC will be making a debut in the second tier of Ghana Football. Gbewaa FC may however have to hit the ground running as the Division One League starts on the weekend of 3rd and 4th February, 2018, barely two weeks from now.

The last time a team from Yendi played in the Ghana Division One League was seventeen (17yrs) years ago when Yendi Lions represented the Northern Region in the competition in 2001.

There is also a concern as to where the team will play their home matches as there seems to be no grassed field in Yendi to satisfy the requirements of the Club Licensing Board. The Club Licensing regime requires that a field that hosts the Division One League must be grassed, must have an inner perimeter and must have a dressing room(s).

However, as it stands now, there is no field in Yendi with these requirements. This will leave Gbewaa FC with the only option of playing their matches in Tamale.

It will be recalled that clubs in Bolga, notably Tanga FC had to withdraw from the Division One League last season due to the unavailability of a ‘qualified’ field in the whole of Upper East Region and the team rejected the option of playing matches in Tamale.

Just last season, Bolga Allstars had to play their matches at the Kasalgu Complex of the Tamale Utrecht Football Academy after they qualified two seasons ago from Zone One to play in the Ghana Premier League.
